Why did I choose to Exclusively Pump?

I get asked this question a lot. Why would I chose to exclusively pump? Well I didnt really choose it, it chose me.

Right after birth Nova latched on perfect every time. The nurses and doctors were so suprised at how quickly she was able to get the hang of it.

24 hours after her birth she dropped about half a pound, which they were not comfortable with, so here started the pumping journey. Everytime she breastfed, I would pump right after for 15 minutes, while my fiance gave her formula to supplement. We continued that for 24 hours and she thankfully started gaining the weight back. My milk came in quickly and we no longer needed to supplement with the fomula after the feedings. I did however need to continue pumping after she fed for whatever reason. (this is where the problems manifested)

I continued that and couldnt stop because I started overproducing, that quickly lead to a forceful letdown which would gag Nova and make her throw up. After 4 weeks of that, the pediatrician suggested I pump the breastmilk and give it to her by bottle. So thats what I did. My goal is to make it to 1 year on breastmilk. I only have 8 months to go!

Somethings I wish I could change, I wish I didnt have to devote so much time to pumping, etc. But I personally would feel selfish if I quit giving her breastmilk because it makes my life more inconvienent.

We have been exclusively pumping for 3 months now and we are still going strong. There is not a day that goes by that I dont want to quit. Its a very hard journey. If any other mamas out there exclusively pump, pat on the back for you. Its extremely hard.

I am compling a list of tips and tricks I have found while pumping and Ill post that when its finished. If you have any tips for me please comment and help everyones journey become a little easier!

    1. Congrats!! Its so hard to stay motivated to do it. Those middle of the night pump sessions always make me question my decision. Lol. I did the math and found out ive spent a total of 10 days pumping so far since Nova has been born. Crazy

Kudos to you for doing this for your child because it certainly feels like a full time job that requires you to be able work 24/7. Keep up with the good work and know that you are not alone!

  2. As difficult as the process is for you, quality breast milk is that good for her. I hope you continue on as you plan. It provides so much more than just nutrition. It provides a healthy source of microbes important in developing a healthy microbiome for her. It provides immunity protection. It reduces allergies and asthma risks. (The list goes on…)

I wish only the best for you and your family with this joyous blessing bestowed upon you. They grow up fast, so make sure you enjoy every moment! 🙂
